September at Tremenheere: Music, Mindfulness, and Rare Plants

September at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens brings together music, movement, plants, and art, with events to inspire, restore, and delight. As the school holidays fade and the pace of life begins to settle, the Gardens take on a quieter, more reflective atmosphere. The first signs of autumn appear in the landscape, with shifting light and the late flush of colour in the borders, making this a beautiful time to visit. Here’s what’s happening this month.

Violin, Music, Sky

Friday 5 September, from 5pm
More information →

An extraordinary evening of music unfolds across the Gardens, Skyspace and Gallery, celebrating the works of acclaimed British composer David Matthews. Performed by violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved, the programme journeys through European and Australian birdsong, northern landscapes, and Italian mountain ranges, music perfectly attuned to Tremenheere’s natural setting.

The evening begins in the Skyspace at 5pm with Telemann’s Fantasie 5 (1735), Westhoff’s Imitatione delle Campane (1694), and David Matthews’ Four Australian Birds, Monte Maggio. At 6.30pm, the performance continues in Tremenheere Gallery with Telemann’s Fantasies 6–8 (1735), Walsh and Meares’ Birds from The Bird-Fancier’s Delight (1705/1717), and a sequence of works by David Matthews including Arctic Suite, Fantasies, Chants, Song Thrush, The Tui’s Song, and Blackbird Fugue.

This unique pairing of music and place invites audiences to listen deeply, to the violin, to birdsong, to landscape, and to the sky above.

Sunday brings the return of Tremenheere’s much-loved Rare Plant Fair, a highlight of the gardening calendar and a must-visit for anyone with a passion for plants. Specialist nurseries from across the South-West will gather in the beautiful surroundings of the Gardens, including Surreal Succulents — RHS Chelsea 2025 winners and based onsite at Tremenheere. Visitors will find rare and unusual plants, expert advice, and plenty of inspiration for their own gardens.

The Fair is open from 10am until 3pm, with free admission. Standard charges apply for entry to the sculpture gardens, making it the perfect opportunity to combine a day of plant hunting with time among world-class art and landscapes. Tremenheere Kitchen will be serving seasonal lunches and refreshments throughout the day, and The Shop will be open with gifts, books, and locally made items. Arriving early is recommended for the best selection, and don’t forget to bring something to carry your new botanical treasures home.
