Newlyn School of Art return to Tremenheere Gallery to present end of year shows connected to a number of their year-long courses.

Hannah Woodman: With a Single Step… – Lower gallery, 6th July – 3rd August
Following a successful solo show in 2017, Hannah Woodman returns to Tremenheere and brings together a collection of work reflecting the heritage and history of Cornwall’s coast and its communities, as well as seeking inspiration from a curious family discovery where art unlocked genealogy to unite both past and present.
Hannah’s paintings will be exhibited alongside a collection of ceramic pots by Caroline Winn, drawing on narratives around migration and trade and using salt as a metaphor.

Second Nature – Both galleries, 10th August – 7th September
An exhibition of mostly London-based sculptors creating work from a starting point of Tremenheere’s beautiful natural environment. Work will explore the many ways we may think about the natural world today – what is artificial and what is organic, altered versions of nature that reflect our interaction with the planet, migration in ecology, the movement of a species to a different environment.
The participating artists make up the group Changeable Beast and cover a wide variety of materials and media. Tessa Garland, one of the founding members of Changable Beast, is a former resident of Penzance and as part of work with Penwith Artist Led Projects (PALP) has previously curated ephermeral projects and exhibitions at Tremenheere.

Romi Behrens: A Painting Life – Lower gallery, 13th September – 5th October
Following a successful retrospective exhibition in 2018, Tremenheere Gallery will again present an exhibition of paintings by Romi Behrens (1939 – 2019).
This new exhibition will coincide with the publication of the first substantial monograph on the artist; Romi Behrens: A Painting Life. The book will provide a selected but characteristically-diverse range of visual and written material from the artist’s oeuvre and archives, starting with Romi’s earliest paintings of her family, friends and the streets of Penzance and extending to religious themes done later in her life.

Women Talking: Paintings by Janet Lynch and poetry by Ellen Phethean – Upper gallery, 13th September – 5th October
This project brings together two people who want to have a conversation about what it is to be a woman; artist Janet Lynch and poet Ellen Phethean. Curated by Miranda Leonard.
Ellen is a life-long writer with a distinct voice. In her recent book Portrait of the Quince as an Older Woman, Ellen wrote about her life in a world made alien with loss and absence. She acknowledges aging but also the pleasure of grandchildren and the recompenses of writing. Her poems explore the older woman’s place in contemporary culture.
Janet Lynch, now 84, is a painter whose work is full of life that genuinely springs forth from her brush, this current way of working represents a new way of approaching her creativity.
