Summer at Tremeheere: Music, exhibitions & conversations

July is full of opportunities to experience art, music and conversation at Tremenheere. From a special evening of live performance tomorrow, to thought-provoking exhibitions and artist talks throughout the month, here’s what’s coming up.

Now until 25 July: Holy Animals Sacred Plants: Responses to Other Lives

Holy Animals Sacred Plants curated by Kate Walters, invites visitors to slow down and listen to animals, plants, dreams and the quieter voices that shape our experience of the world. Featuring the work of eleven artists, the exhibition offers thoughtful and imaginative responses to other lives through painting, drawing, textiles, film and mixed-media works.

Upcoming Events: Listening to Other Lives

Join us on Saturday 11 July, 5–7pm for a special panel discussion with exhibiting artists exploring the ideas and practices behind the exhibition. Entry is by donation on the door and everyone is welcome.

Making Spirit Cloths & Spirit Dolls

Continue your journey into the themes of Holy Animals Sacred Plants: Responses to Other Lives with two creative workshops led by Sally Tripptree and Christine Linfield, Sunday 19 July.

Create a slow-stitched Spirit Cloth or handcrafted Spirit Doll using natural materials in a relaxed and welcoming environment. No experience is necessary, all materials are provided, and all proceeds will be donated to Nowzad, supporting animals affected by war and conflict.

Book a morning or afternoon session, or enjoy both.

Now until 25 July: Alice Irwin, Peeps

To mark the recent arrival of Alice Irwin’s Peep series to the Sculpture Gardens’ collection, Tremenheere Gallery presents an exhibition of the artist’s printed works in the lower gallery studio room.

Bringing together a selection of works spanning a number of print series, all created between 2022 and 2024, the exhibition offers an insight into the development of the artist’s distinctive visual language during the same period in which she was creating the Peep sculptures.

Organised in collaboration with Gillian Jason Gallery, all works in the exhibition are available for purchase.

Forage and Make a Mat or Bowl from Plants, Friday 14 August, 10am – 4pm

Spend a day immersed in the gardens learning the ancient craft of weaving with locally foraged plants. Guided by an expert tutor, you’ll discover how grasses, garden cuttings and other natural materials can be transformed into beautiful, functional mats, bowls or vessels using simple weaving and stitching techniques.

The workshop includes a guided foraging walk, hands-on tuition and all the skills you’ll need to continue making at home. You’ll leave with your own handcrafted piece, materials to keep practising, and a fresh appreciation for the creative potential of the plants growing all around us.

Looking Ahead | Seascapes and Love Songs

Friday 4 September

Peter Sheppard Skærved returns to Tremenheere with Seascapes and Love Songs, an evening of music inspired by the Atlantic coast, friendship and artistic collaboration.

Performed in James Turrell’s Skyspace and the Tremenheere Gallery, the programme brings together works by Tartini, Paganini, Benjamin Britten and Elisabeth Lutyens alongside music by acclaimed British composer Robert Saxton, including the world premieres of A Local Train of Thought and Seascape with Love Song, both written especially for Tremenheere.

A fitting close to the summer concert series, the evening celebrates the creative dialogue between music, landscape and visual art.
