As summer gently gives way to autumn, there is something particularly special about taking a moment to pause and notice the changing light around us. This September, visitors have the opportunity to experience that transition in a truly unique setting, as Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens opens its gates after hours for an evening beneath the Cornish sky.
On Tuesday 22 September, the Gardens will mark the Autumn Equinox with a special evening opening and a dusk experience inside Tewlwolow Kernow, James Turrell’s Skyspace.
A window to the sky
Nestled amongst the gardens, the Skyspace is unlike a traditional work of art. Rather than presenting an object to look at, it creates a space in which the sky itself becomes the artwork.
The elliptical chamber has a large opening in its ceiling, framing a section of sky above. As daylight begins to fade, the experience slowly changes. The colours of the sky shift, clouds move across the opening and the balance between the light outside and the carefully controlled illumination within the Skyspace begins to alter our perception of what we are seeing.
The name Tewlwolow Kernow means Twilight in Cornwall, a fitting name for a space that is particularly magical at dawn and dusk. At these moments, the changing relationship between natural and artificial light creates an atmosphere that can feel both hypnotic and wonderfully peaceful.
The magic of the Autumn Equinox
The Autumn Equinox is a natural moment of transition – a point in the year when day and night are approximately equal in length. It marks the beginning of astronomical autumn and provides a fitting backdrop for an experience centred around light, time and changing perception.
Inside the Skyspace, the passing of the day becomes something to experience rather than simply observe. For around 45 minutes, visitors can sit quietly and watch as the evening sky gradually transforms above them.
There is something almost magical about the simplicity of it. There is no screen, soundtrack or traditional artwork competing for your attention. Instead, you are encouraged to slow down, look upwards and notice something that we often take for granted: the changing light of the sky.
An experience to remember
Part of the beauty of a Skyspace is that no two visits are quite the same. The weather, clouds, season and time of day all influence what you see. A clear evening may reveal changing shades of blue and pink, while clouds can become striking silhouettes against the fading light.
James Turrell has spent decades exploring light and perception, creating spaces that encourage us to become more aware of how we see. At Tremenheere, this work sits within a wider landscape of sculpture and subtropical planting, making the journey to and from the Skyspace part of the experience too.
For the Autumn Equinox event, the Gardens open from 6pm, with visitors meeting in the Skyspace at 7.40pm for the dusk experience. The event will finish after sunset, so warm, weather-appropriate clothing and a torch are essential. The event is planned to go ahead in almost all weather conditions.
As the seasons change and the evenings begin to draw in, the Autumn Equinox offers the perfect opportunity to pause, look up and experience Cornwall’s changing light in a completely different way.
