Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens is known for its stunning blend of art, nature, and creativity, and the newest addition to its vibrant landscape is no exception. Helena and Vicky, two talented volunteers, have embarked on an exciting design project; The Little Cape Garden, a tribute to the rich flora of South Africa, nestled on a slope beyond the iconic James Turrell Skyspace.
The journey began with a thorough site analysis and initial drafts, where Helena and Vicky envisioned a space that would harmonise with the natural surroundings while showcasing the beauty of mostly South African plants. Their careful planning and attention to detail quickly took shape as they created a master plan that would guide the transformation of this sloping area into a breath-taking, botanical masterpiece.

The garden design is centred around the use of plants native to South Africa, with a focus on creating a dynamic and sustainable environment that thrives in the local conditions. The carefully selected plants, chosen for their seasonal interest, unique textures, warmer colours from yellow to deep red, and resilience, bring a taste of the Cape’s diverse landscapes to Cornwall. From the striking Kniphofia Ember Glow to the delicate Nerine, each plant has been thoughtfully placed to create a harmonious, living tapestry.
As the planting phase takes shape, the garden begins to tell its own story. Visitors to Tremenheere will be able to walk around this tranquil space, experiencing the beauty of South African flora, beautifully framed by the sculptural landscape of the gardens.

The Little Cape Garden is a stunning example of what can be achieved when volunteers with a shared passion for design and nature come together. It’s an exciting addition to Tremenheere’s collection, and we can’t wait for visitors to explore this new garden in the months to come.
