Newlyn School of Art’s Four Week Gallery Takeover

Newlyn School of Art is a dynamic and innovative art school situated in the heart of the famous artistic colony of Newlyn in Cornwall. 

The School provides a wide range of high-quality and exciting short art courses, online short courses and Year-long courses; all taught by over thirty of the most respected artists working in Cornwall today.

They offer a range of art courses for all levels exploring everything from seascapes and landscapes to abstract figures and mono printing, in the form of year long courses, online courses and short courses, some of which take place on the dramatic Cornish coastline.

Newlyn School of Art

Next month (June 2023), Newlyn School of Art return to Tremenheere Gallery to present end of year shows for their year-long courses; Studio Practice Course, Mentoring Programme and Professional Landscape Mentoring programme. The four-week Gallery takeover also features a two-day exhibition curated by course leader Jesse Leroy Smith, details of which will be confirmed soon.


Studio Practice Course

1st – 4th June, 10am – 4pm

Social opening: Fri 2nd June, 5 – 9pm

The first of the School’s year-long course shows. The Studio Practice Course is designed for artists with an existing practice and an established identity to their work, helping them to consider whether they are using the most appropriate materials, support and scale.

Dan Pyne and Jesse Leroy Smith lead the course creating continuity through the year, while visiting artists will take an in-depth look at students’ work and engage with it as well as give demonstrations and talks on their practice. 

Rapture

7th – 12th June, 10am – 4pm

Social opening: Fri 9th June, 5 – 9pm

The Brighton instalment of RAPTURE is now moving to Cornwall! The artists represented will be a new mix of those who showed with us in Brighton and artists from the geographical area.

Pulse – Mentoring Programme

17th – 18th June, 10am – 4pm

Social opening: Fri 16th June, 5 – 9pm

The second of the School’s year-long course shows. The Mentoring Programme offers artist who are at the point of launching themselves professionally, the remarkable experience of a year of guidance from many leading artists. 

Led by Jesse Leroy Smith, one of the topics covered in the course is a discussion of the range of ways in which you can get your work seen by the public from approaching commercial and public gallery spaces to artist-led shows, social media, promoting events in the press, open studios and grant-funded projects.

Wild Earth – Professional Landscape Mentoring Programme

23rd – 25th June, 10am – 4pm

Social opening: Fri 23rd June, 5 – 9pm

The third and final of the School’s year-long course shows. The Professional Landscape Mentoring Programme is a form of the Mentoring Programme specific to landscape painting.

Other artists sharing their experience with the group and often engaging individually with participants’ work include Anita Reynolds, Paul Lewin, Anthony Garratt, Gareth Edwards, Imogen Bone, Maggie O’Brien, Jon Doran, Rachael Reeves, Luke Knight, and Hannah Woodman among other artists.

Tremenheere Gallery will be open during these exhibitions 10am-4pm each day. Please note that outside of the individual exhibition opening times listed below, the Gallery will be closed for rehanging.
