From Cornwall to London, and back again.

The story of Serena Wadham unfolds like a timeline through place, people and protest - beginning in her spiritual home of Cornwall, moving through the streets of London, and returning once more to Cornwall in the later years of her life.

A trailblazing photojournalist, activist and quietly radical observer, Serena documented the social changes of the 1960s, 70s and 80s: feminist campaigns, anti-Vietnam protests, working-class and immigrant communities, artists, musicians, scientists, bus drivers and the everyday lives of people too often overlooked.

With around 90,000 negatives and a remarkable archive of photographs, notes, letters and artefacts held at The @morrablibrary in Penzance, Serena’s story is only now being fully brought into the light.

These photographs offer more than a glimpse into the past. They ask us to look again at the issues that continue to shape our world today.

Cornwall → London → Cornwall. A life in photographs.

Remember the Great Eclipse of 1999? ☀

On 11 August 1999, Cornwall found itself in the path of a total solar eclipse, an extraordinary moment when the day briefly turned to darkness.

But did you know that the eclipse also played a special part in the story of Tremenheere’s #JamesTurrell Skyspace?

James Turrell came to Tremenheere in 1998 while looking for a place from which to observe the eclipse. A temporary Skyspace was created here for the occasion, bringing together Turrell’s fascination with light, sky and perception with one of nature’s most spectacular events.

That temporary structure was the beginning of something much more permanent.

Today, Tewlwolow Kernow, Cornish for ‘Twilight in Cornwall’, sits amongst the gardens, inviting visitors to pause, look up and experience the changing sky through Turrell’s carefully designed aperture. As the light changes, so does the way we perceive the space above us.

Come and experience the Skyspace for yourself, and see what the sky looks like through Turrell’s eyes ✨

And tonight, 27 years later, we have another reason to look up at the sky. Perhaps it’s a fitting moment to remember where the story of Tewlwolow Kernow began.
