We’re delighted to have welcomed a new sculpture to the Gardens, Wait-a-while by Aimee Lax.
‘Wait-a-while’ is originally inspired by a vine of the same name from The Daintree rainforest, Australia. This porcelain creation has morphed in the making, the artist is drawn to otherworldliness, ambiguity and the familiar/unfamiliar.
Aimee Lax was an artist in residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2019 and has permanent works at V&A and Eden Project. She is a Lecturer in Ceramics at Bath Spa University.
“Exploring themes of attraction/repulsion, familiar/unfamiliar and other-worldliness, I present a notion of nature that can be simultaneously threatening and beautiful.
The materials I use in making sculpture are vital to this discourse. I use porcelain for its symbolism, its purity, fragility/ strength in commenting on nature, both as we know and imagine it. The ceramic medium is perfect for harnessing this fragile power. The ceramic methods I use in making are often traditionally based and the sculptures can exist in a variety of environments, often made in components they can transform and change through installation and in response to site-specific contexts and questions,” says Aimee
Wait-a-while can be found along the boardwalk through the woods at the lower side of the Gardens. *Top tip: Don’t forget to look up! The Gardens are open daily, 10.30-5.30, last entry 4.30.
