25 April – 6 June 2026
Opening event: Fri 24 April, 6-8pm (all welcome)
Tir ha Trig (Land and Ebb) brings together paintings spanning the past 25 years. Speaking about the exhibition Judy Buxton and Virginia Bounds say: ‘As two painters, we share Australian heritage, living and painting in Cornwall as well as the complexities of straddling these two territories – both physically and in the psyche. We painted ‘plein-air’ together in the late 90s, sharing the love of landscape and the visceral qualities of paint. The play and tension between figuration and abstraction are seen in different ways in our works.’
Judy Buxton’s work is shaped by the landscape of the Lizard Peninsula and the tidal creeks at the head of the Helford River. From her studio surrounded by fields, hedges and oak trees, she repeatedly returns to the coves, creeks, river and moorland interior. Time spent working in the Australian bush also informs her practice, where the geology and atmosphere echo aspects of the Cornish landscape. Buxton begins with small plein-air studies before developing larger studio paintings, built up through layers of scraping, drawing and reworking that emphasise the physicality, movement, weather and light of the landscape.
Virginia Bounds draws and paints from her immediate surroundings, exploring the fleeting play of light and shadow. She layers colour and form, building and unbuilding compositions until new, unexpected visions emerge. Her work resists stillness, filled with movement and rhythm that reflect a life constantly in motion. Once a nurse, she travelled widely before studying at Falmouth College of Art – experiences of diverse landscapes and vistas of the mind that continue to shape her practice.
Tir ha Trig runs across both floors of Tremenheere Gallery and will be open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 4pm. Entry to Tremenheere Gallery is free, with most works available to purchase (both in-person and online).
