Artist Talks with Mark Kermode: Sun 19 April, 2 – 3.30pm (all welcome)
For its 2026 spring show, Newlyn Society of Artists welcomes Mark Kermode as guest curator. Inviting a guest artist, writer, academic or critic to curate an exhibition brings a fresh perspective to the selection of members’ work, generating new dialogues among a group of artists working across a diverse range of subject matter, styles and media. Rather than asking members to make work in response to a theme, Kermode invited artists to submit work that best represents their current practice.
Mark Kermode is a film critic and musician, a presenter on radio and television, and the author of several books on film and music. He co-hosts the weekly film podcast Kermode and Mayo’s Take with Simon Mayo, and presents the BBC Radio 4 programme Screenshot with Ellen E. Jones. His television work includes the Mark Kermode’s Secrets of Cinema.
Eye of the Lens is the title Kermode has given to this exhibition. He explains: “I had a number of reasons for suggesting this title. It relates to a song by a band I love, and to a series of stories. But mainly it refers to everything being seen through the eye of the viewer’s own individual lens.”
Established in the late nineteenth century by an influential group of landscape and social realist painters, the Newlyn Society of Artists was originally based at Newlyn Art Gallery. Today the society continues to thrive as a group of almost 100 contemporary artists who live in West Cornwall or have a close connection to the area. Eye of the Lens runs across both floors of Tremenheere Gallery and will be open daily, 10.30 – 4.30. Entry to Tremenheere Gallery is free, with most works available to purchase.
